Greensburg- Rivals North Decatur and Greensburg faced off against each other Tuesday evening in Greensburg. The Lady Pirates took an early lead with freshman Aly Powers hitting two three pointers and putting her squad up 10-2 midway through the first frame. Freshman Carmen Thackery came off the bench and scored eight points to put the Lady Bucs up 21-11 after the first quarter. A third Greensburg freshman Mary Harmon started the second period with a steal and an assist to Leah West, then Harmon went coast to coast after collecting a rebound and scoring on a layup to put GCHS up 32-14. North then warmed up from the field going on a 7-0 run with Kelsey Haley hitting a three and Ella Kunz working the boards and scoring on put backs. With 2:20 to go in the half the Greensburg lead was cut to 12. West hit a free throw and that was the last Lady Bucs score of the half. Haley and Kunz both scored again, and the score was 33-25 at the half.
North kept the momentum going to begin the third period. Madelyn Bohman and Madi Allen scored for the Lady Chargers, and Kunz added a basket to cut the lead to two points. West scored in the pain on back-to-back possessions for Greensburg, and Harmon hit from downtown to pull the lead back to double digits. Allen went to the line and completed a three-point play. The Lady Bucs defense held North to five more points in the frame while scoring 12, led by Carlee Adams who connected on two three-point shots. The Lady Bucs led going into the final frame 53-39. The Lady Chargers, led by Kunz, made an effort to get back in the game with Kunz matching the Lady Pirates total quarter points, and dropped nine points in the final frame. The 17 points scored by North in the period wasn’t enough to overcome the Greensburg lead. The 62-56 victory moves the Lady Bucs to 2-0 on the season. Greensburg will be at home Friday night when they host State champion runner ups from a year ago Franklin (2-0), who dropped 80 on the Lady Bucs in last season’s match-up.
