Lady Lions topple Knights, Boyer lands 36

AURORA – The Rushville Lady Lions and South Dearborn Lady Knights faced off Saturday night in the Dragon’s Den. Rushville’s press kept the Lady Knights scoreless for the first five minutes of action while taking a 7-0 lead en route to a big 50-31 victory.
Grace Messmore finally got SD on the board with a free throw. Leonie Boyer got four more points, giving her seven in the frame. Natalie Rupp hit two more free throws for SD and the score was 11-3 after one quarter in favor of Rushville.
Boyer added 10 more points to her total in the second frame while SD put up 11 with Zoey Heizer hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer to make the score 21-14 midway through the contest.
The Lady Knights scored 11 more points in the third quarter. Boyer added nine points for Rushville while Belle Gossett and Briley Munchel both added a pair of free throws. The Lady Lions led after three frames 36-22.
Rupp scored eight of the Lady Knights’ nine fourth-quarter points with Messmore hitting a free throw. Boyer continued to score at will, starting the final frame off with a three-point basket and finishing the game with a career high of 36 points.
Rushville improved to 3-0 on the season with the 19-point conference victory. Boyer led all scorers with 36 points and collected eight rebounds. Gossett, Munchel, and Gracie Buzzard scored four points, and Kylee Herbert added a pair of free throws to finish with two points.
Munchel also finished the game with 10 steals, Gossett getting 6, Boyer 2 and Herbert and Buzzard 1 apiece. Gossett had 7 boards, Munchel 5, Buzzard, Olivia Smith and Ericka Kuhn 3 each, Kiley Parsley 2 and Herbert 1. Munchel, Gossett and Herbert each dished 2 assists, with Smith and Parsley getting 1 dime each.
South Dearborn was led by Rupp with 10 points, Messmore 7, Heizer 6, Kiersten Dixon and Lakota Vincent 3 each and Bernadette Wismann finished with two points.
The Lady Lions will be back in action on Friday at Memorial Gym when they host Mt. Vernon Fortville. Saturday, RCHS visits Beech Grove for a varsity-only game tipping at 6 p.m.
