Beech Grove takes down Rushville in final seconds

The Rushville Lady Lions went on the road to take on the Beech Grove Lady Hornets Saturday night. Briley Munchel hit two early three pointers to put Rushville up 8-2 in less than two minutes played. Gracie Buzzard then got the hot hand for the Lady Lions dropping 10 points in the frame. Buzzard’s final two baskets put Rushville up 20-12 to end of the first quarter.  Munchel found a. Open Olivia Smith to get the Lady Lions first basket in the second frame. Both squads got cold after that, and the score remained 22-15 for the next five minutes. Kylee Herbert then knocked down a three putting Rushville up by 10 with just under two minutes to go until halftime. Rushville then went 0-4 from the field to close out the half while Beech Grove added six points and cut the Rushville lead to 25-21 at the half.
It was iron unkind for the Lady Lions to start the third quarter, while the Lady Hornets took a 26-25 lead on a Chanya Lambert long three pointer. Munchel put an end to the cold streak and scored three from downtown to retake the lead. A 5-0 run by Beech Grove had Rushville down 31-28 with 2:25 to go in the frame. Leonie Boyer went to the line and got her first point of the night from the charity stripe and Herbert added three points putting Rushville up 32-31. A three pointer from the Lady Hornets was matched by a Belle Gossett three pointer at the buzzer to give the Lady Lions a 35-34 lead going into the final period.  Rushville came out in the final frame and went on a 7-0 run before Beech Grove hit their first shot in the period with five minutes to go in the contest. Gossett hit a basket to Rushville up 43-38 with four minutes to play. The Lady Hornets got a free throw and Rushville led by four for the next three minutes. With 1:30 to go Beech Grove cut the lead to two after a mid-range jump shot found the net. The two teams remained in a stalemate until Mylee Boiling put back a missed free throw to tie the game up 43-43. With 3.5 seconds to Beech Grove sophomore Jess Scott hit a 17-foot jumper to take the lead. Boyer’s final half-court shot found the rim but didn’t go in and Rushville lost their second game of the weekend 45-43. Munchel led Rushville in scoring with 11, Buzzard had 10, Gossett and Herbert 9, and Boyer and Smith 2. The Lady Lions are back in action next Wednesday when they host the Union County Patriots.
