Lady Pirates split pair to start season

The Greensburg softball team is 1-1 this week to start the season. The Lady Pirates opened the season Tuesday with a 10-0 shutout over Jac-Cen-Del. On Wednesday they hosted Madison and fell to a talented Lady Cubs team, 12-4.

Greensburg put up four runs in the first inning and three in the second inning, then cruised to a 10-0 win over Jac-Cen-Del. Senior Kaydence Gates went five innings in the circle to earn the win while collecting nine strikeouts. Gates allowed just one hit and walked one in the game. Carlee Adams picked up two hits and three RBIs. Lydia Balser scored three runs, Carmen Thackery and Emma McQueen scored twice, and Evvy Clevenger, Emilee Ernstes and Macy Simmonds each scored a run. Greensburg walked nine times and had nine hits in the game.

In Wednesday’s game against Madison, Gates fell behind early giving up five runs in the fist inning; Madison collected four hits and walk and reached on an error in the frame. The Lady Bucs scored in the third inning when McQueen scored off a Balser triple, then Balser plated a run to make the score 6-2 Madison. McQueen and Balser scored again in the fifth inning off a Gates line drive to left field. The score was 6-4 until the Lady Cubs added two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to give Greensburg a 12-4 loss.

Gates finished with a complete game, going seven innings and striking out two and walking two.

Greensburg is in action again on Wednesday, April 5 when they host South Dearborn.
