Greensburg tops Tigers in EIAC matchup

The Lawrenceburg Tigers traveled to Greensburg on Monday evening to take on the Pirates in their first conference matchup of the season. Senior Andrew Meyers singled in the first inning to knock in Nolan McLane putting LHS up after the first half inning. The Bucs tied the game back up in the bottom of the first when sophomore Caleb Greiwe stole home tying the game up at 1-1. Lance Coy shut down the Tigers in the second frame with two strikeouts. Justin Adkins started the Bucs second frame off with a double then Nolan Vertz walked the bases loaded. Another Vertz walk sent Adkins home, and with the bases loaded Matthew Everroad crushed one over the centerfield wall putting Greensburg up 6-1. The Pirates drew two more walks from Vertz and Adkins came back up to bat with two runners on and the junior got ahold of a Vertz fastball and went yard, putting GCHS up 9-1 after two innings.
Lawrenceburg added three more runs in the third inning, Vertz picked up an RBI single bringing in Tanner Pell, Coy then issued a bases loaded walk scoring Andrew Meyers, and TJ Tibbetts singled in Vertz to make it a 9-4 ballgame. Jordan Davidson came into pitch for the Tigers in the bottom of the third and picked up two strikeouts without allowing a run. The Bucs brought in Bryson Kelso to pitch the fourth inning and he blanked LHS. The bottom of the fourth inning brought Adkins back up for the Pirates and he picked up another RBI, scoring Johnny Linville. Kyle Heeney came into pitch for LHS and a wild pitch scored Cy Miller to put GCHS up 11-4 through four innings. Kelso pitched a quick fifth frame retiring the Tigers on three straight flyouts. With Heeney on the mound for the fifth inning, the Tigers pitcher walked Leland Workman, then gave up a double to Austin Adams that scored Workman. Everroad reached on an error and Adams advanced home. With the bases loaded Adkins drew a walk and the Pirates run-ruled the Tigers 14-4.
Greensburg is now 2-0 on the season with the Tigers falling in their first contest of the season to go 0-1. Coy went three innings for the Pirates to earn the win, he struke out five and gave up three hits. Kelso held the Tigers scoreless in his two innings of work and picked up two strikeouts. The Tigers got 1.2 innings from Vertz and 1.1 each from Davidson and Heeney. Everroad and Adkins both collected two hits and four RBI’s in the game for the Bucs. The Tigers got three hits on the night with Vertz, Tibbetts each reaching on singles and Meyers a double.
LHS is in action again this evening when they host Milan for their first home game of the season. Greensburg travels to Madison tonight to take on the Cubs in a non-conference game.
