Tigers extend Rushville losing streak

The Rushville Lions (1-9, 1-4) have now lost seven games in a row after a Monday night loss to the Lawrenceburg Tigers. The game remained knotted at zero until the third inning when Lawrenceburg’s Andrew Meyers doubled to score Nolan McLane. McLane scored again in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Tigers went up 3-0 after an RBI double from Noah Redar. McLane scored his third run of the contest when Kyle Heeney knocked in him and Oliver Barr in the sixth frame to go up 5-0, a score that stood for the remainder of the game. The Lions only managed two hits in the game, a double by Ralph Eakins and a single from Jack Barnes. 

Heeney went seven innings to earn the shutout win for Lawrenceburg. He finished with eight strikeouts and walked three in the contest. Tyler Smith pitched a complete game for Rushville, picking up eight Ks and allowing three earned runs. The Tigers improved to 3-7 on the season with the win and are now 1-4 in EIAC games.

Lady Lions on a solid roll after win over Greensburg

The Rushville Lady Lions’ softball team used a huge first inning to go up on EIAC rival Greensburg on Monday evening. Rushville put up eight runs in the first frame and held the Lady Pirates scoreless until the fourth inning. Molly Zachery singled in the winning run in the bottom of the fifth giving Rushville an 11-1 win. Stacey Roberts tossed a complete game while allowing just two hits and striking out seven.


The Lady Lions came to bat in the bottom of the first inning and with two outs, they went on a scoring spree. Belle Gossett scored from third on a wild pitch, Kylie Gray doubled knocking in two runs, Ericka Kuhn doubled knocking in Gray. Kuhn made her way to third on a hard-hit groundball by Katelyn Asher, then scored on a wild pitch. Briley Munchel cleared the bases and picked up two RBIs before she made her way to third and stole home to put Rushville up 8-0. Roberts faced nine Greensburg batters through three innings and retired them all. The Lady Lions still led after three frames 8-0.


Greensburg got on the board in the fourth inning when Lydia Balser led off the inning with a double and Kaydence Gates singled to knock in her teammate in the next at-bat. Gossett led off for Rushville in the bottom half of the inning and roped a double to left field; she scored along with Zachery on a Roberts single. The Lady Lions led after four innings 10-1.
Roberts got the Lady Pirates to go three up, three down in the top of the fifth inning. Layla Shepherdson got on base in the bottom half of the frame and Gossett doubled again, moving Shepherdson to third; Zachery connected, sending the winning run home with a walkoff single to centerfield. The 11-1 win puts the Lady Lions at 5-3 on the season and 2-3 in EIAC games.


Gossett went two for three in the game, Zachery and Gray also had two hits each, helping RCHS finish with 10 hits. Gray had two RBIs to lead Rushville. Greensburg managed two hits (Balser, Gates) against Roberts, who issued just one walk to Alexis Condon in the game. Balser took the loss for the Lady Pirates, lasting two-thirds of the first inning. Gates tossed the final four innings for Greensburg and finished with five strikeouts and just one earned run. Rushville will travel to Knightstown Wednesday evening then host Greenfield- Central Thursday. Greensburg will host North Decatur this evening at 5:30pm.

Lions tamed by North Central

INDIANAPOLIS – The Rushville Lions traveled to North Central for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

In the first game the Lions fell behind early as the Panthers scored two first-inning runs and added five more in the second frame. They went up 10-0 after four innings and the Lions were finally able to get runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth frame. Quentin Cain got on base with a walk and Jack Barnes roped a double that scored Cain. Senior Bryce Berkemeier came up to bat with two runners on and homered to centerfield to make the score 10-4.

The game ended in the bottom of the fifth when the Panthers knocked two out of the park to go up 15-4. Maurice Manghelli threw four innings, allowed nine hits, three walks, six earned runs and six strikeouts. Chase Woolf pitched the final inning, walking two and giving up five runs. Only four Lions got a hit (Berkemeier, Manghelli, Barnes, and Nicholas Bowles) in the game.

The second game began with Rushville’s Kam Morton picking up two first-inning RBIs after knocking in Barnes and N. Bowles. Manghelli and Morton then scored on an error and RCHS was up 4-0 to start the game.

Berkemeier took the mound for Rushville in the second contest and North Central led off the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back solo home runs. An error on Rushville allowed another Panther to cross the plate, and a wild pitch, then a sacrifice scored two more North Central runs and Rushville had lost the lead, 5-4.

Berkemeier hit a batter to start the bottom of the second frame, then gave up a triple, a single, and a home run and it was 9-4 in North Central’s favor. Freshman Colin Taylor was brought in to pitch and the Panthers added another run on a single that dropped in front of N. Bowles. The Panthers hit three long balls in the bottom of the third inning, added eight more runs and the score was 19-4. Rushville added a run in the top of the fourth frame when Taylor scored on a passed ball.

An RBI single by North Central in the fourth inning was the final run scored in the game and the Lions fell 19-5. RCHS got just three hits in the game, one each from Berkemeier, Manghelli and Barnes. Ralph Eakins pitched an inning in the game and recorded three strikeouts. Berkemeier allowed eight runs with two strikeouts in his inning of work, and Taylor went two innings with four earned runs allowed, and two strikeouts.

The loss is the sixth in a row for the Lions, who are now 1-8 on the season. They face Lawrenceburg this week with an away game tonight and a home contest on Thursday.

Rushville Blanks Lady Chargers 12-0

RUSHVILLE- Stacey Roberts was in the circle for the Lady Lions on Tuesday evening. The sophomore tossed a complete game, allowing just two hits, and one walk, while fanning 10 North Decatur batters. Belle Gossett got Rushville on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a hard hit, two RBI double. Roberts retired the next six Lady Chargers via strikeout. Rushville added to the scoreboard in the third inning. Kylie Gray knocked in Makenna Ripberger, and Karma Wilson and Ericka Kuhn each knocked in a run to put the Lady Lions up 5-0. Gossett started the bottom of the fourth frame off with a single and three batters later she walked home when Gray took a bases loaded ball four. Roberts allowed just her second base runner of the game when ND’s Katie Gearhart was hit by a pitch in the top of the fifth inning.

Briley Munchel started the bottom of the fifth reaching first base. Layla Shepherdson picked up an RBI scoring Munchel, Ripberger singled knocking in two more runs, and Rushville led 9-0 through five innings. North’s Kennedy Stier led off the sixth with a single, but Roberts retired the next three ND hitters. The Lady Lions ended the game when Shepherdson came up to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared them with a three RBI single. The Lady Lions won 12-0 to improve to 4-3 on the season. They will be back in action next Monday when they host Greensburg (2-3) for a 5:30pm game.
