Patriots fend off Bulldogs’ comeback

The Union County Patriots’ baseball team held off a late Batesville comeback on Tuesday evening to start the season 1-0. UC got the ball rolling early, putting up two runs in the first inning and another in the third to go up 3-0. An explosive fifth inning for UC added five more runs and the Pats led 8-1 going into the final inning. The Bulldogs put five runs across the plate in the top of the seventh frame, but the Pats were able to get the Dogs’ final two batters to fly out, giving UC an 8-6 win.

Kyle Sams started on the mound for UC and got through the first inning allowing only one baserunner, a Jack Grunkemeyer walk. Devyn Shepherd led off for UC in the bottom of the first with a triple. Logan Boone came up to bat and knocked in Shepherd. Two batters later, Josh Klein hit a rope to knock in Boone and put the Patriots up 2-0. BHS pitcher Alex Baumer escaped the inning after giving up five hits.

Sams continued to stifle the Dogs’ batters with his fastball, picking up two strikeouts in the second frame. Baumer got through the second inning without giving up any hits or runs. Batesville went three up, three down in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, Eric Burdine led off with a single. Two outs later, Coleton Wicker singled and Burdine scored the third run for UC. Wicker ended the inning coming up short trying to take second base on the play.

Grunkemeyer started the fourth inning off with a double for the Dogs; Sams retired the next two batters via strikeout, and after making it to third base, Grunkemeyer scored Batesville’s first run on a wild pitch. Cade Kaiser took over on the mound for BHS in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kaiser issued a walk in the frame, but retired three Patriots and the game was still 3-1 in UC’s favor.

Sams continued to deal from the rubber and sent three Bulldogs back to the dugout in the fifth inning. Sams used his bat to get the Pats started in the bottom of the fifth and Burdine followed with his third hit of the night. Mason Stewart singled and picked up an RBI with Sams scoring. Klein singled, and Wicker picked up an RBI knocking in Burdine. UC kept the bats going with Gavin Davis grabbing an RBI after Stewart scored; Klein and Wicker also scored in the frame to give the Patriots an 8-1 lead.

UC brought in senior Mathew Wooley to pitch the sixth inning. Wooley allowed one baserunner and forced three popups to get the UC offense another chance at the plate. Carter Bohman came in to pitch for BHS and shut down the UC offense in the bottom half of the frame. The Dogs started the final frame with a Bohman single and an Eli Loichinger triple that scored Bohman. A. Baumer singled to score Loichinger, Chris Lewis drew a walk and Carson Schneider singled. Grunkemeyer came up to bat for the Dogs and doubled to right field picking up two RBIs. M. Baumer grabbed an RBI in the next at bat, scoring Schneider on a sac fly, and Batesville had closed the gap to two runs. The Patriots got the third out after getting Jaisle to fly out and end the game.

The Bulldogs travel to Connersville tonight for a 6pm contest and host New Palestine on Saturday at noon.

Roberts delivers a 17 K performance for Rushville

The Lady Lions sophomore Stacey Roberts threw a seven-inning complete game while collecting 17 strikeouts and walking none. Roberts only gave up two hits to the Lady Dogs, who’s only run came in the seventh inning when Renee Lecher scored on an error. Freshman Libby Stephens was on the mound for Batesville, and she tossed six scoreless innings giving up just four hits. The freshman then came back out for the top of the seventh and the Lady Lions bats got hot. Roberts started Rushville off with a single, after a steal and an error she crossed the plate. Kylie Gray scored next on a Becca Tabeling single, Karma Wilson knocked in Tabeling, junior Ericka Kuhn singled in Wilson, and Briley Munchel doubled scoring Kuhn to put Rushville up 5-0. The bottom of the seventh saw Lecher single for Batesville, she made her way around the basepaths and crossed the plate for BHS to make it 5-1. Roberts finished the game for RCHS striking out three Lady Dogs and earning the win for Rushville. The Lady Lions start the season 1-0, Batesville is now 1-2. Stephens finished the game with four earned runs in her seven innings, giving up nine hits but walking none. Lecher and Marlee Obermeyer got the only two hits for the Lady Dogs who will travel to take on Jac-Cen-Del this evening. Rushville got two hits each from Kuhn, Wilson, and Molly Zachery. RCHS will travel to take on New Castle this evening.

Lady Bulldogs open season at 1-1

Batesville softball, starting five underclassmen, earned a 12-8 victory over South Ripley March 27 before getting dropped 19-4 at Rising Sun in whipping winds Saturday.

“With it being the first game of the year, jitters, nerves, whatever, I thought they did a great job, especially with bouncing back from an error or not hitting like they wanted and to learn from it and move on to the next play,” said coach Gene Cooney after the Monday tilt.

BHS led the Raiders 6-2 after two innings, 8-5 after four and 10-6 at the end of five. Good defense, including a sweet grab by Ava Hilbert in right field, kept SR off the board in the top of seven.

Junior third baseman Renee Lecher went 2-of-2 with a double and solo homer, scoring four times while reaching base four times. Freshman Addy Froehling doubled, drove in two and scored once. Classmate Lexiyne Harris had a run batted in, walk and steal.

Freshman Libby Stephens made her varsity debut in the circle, hurling a complete game; she allowed 11 hits, five earned runs, just two walks while striking out two. Junior Natasha Fowler had her first varsity start behind the dish; Cooney said she set up well all night and kept the ball in front of her.

Other defensive highlights were sophomore Marlee Obermeyer moving in from left field to fill in at first base, shortstop Calli Fletcher and Harris turning an inning-ending double play, Froehling, Hilbert and Kennedy Westrick hitting their cutoffs from the outfield and steady play by Lecher at third.

“Proud of them for competing each inning, even when it was going back and forth, they never lost confidence,” Cooney added.

At Rising Sun

Very uncomfortable conditions on April Fool’s Day didn’t take the sting off a 15-run loss to the Lady Shiners.

The hosts sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first against Stephens, with nine of those coming around to score. Batesville responded with four runs in the second off starter Alyssa Simpson, but RS added three in the bottom of two and seven more in the third, leading to a 4 ½-inning win.

The Bulldogs put two runners on to start the game before Simpson struck out Obermeyer to end the threat.

The Shiners’ big stanza started with a two-base fielding error in the outfield. An out later, Stephens issued a walk and the first run came home on Ryan Works’ single to left. Tamryn Miller did the same for another RS run. Simpson doubled, followed by an RBI single for Elaina Titkemeyer and two-run double by Sidney Halloran. Hannah Kremer singled to turn the lineup over.

Leadoff Nora Powell then doubled in a run. A BHS throwing error preceded an RBI single by Lily Courtney. Stephens then got back-to-back popups to first base to keep the rally in single digits.

Harris started the Dogs’ reply with a base on balls, then stole second. One out later, a fielder’s choice put runners at the corners. With two down, leadoff hitter Westrick drew a walk to load the bases. Fletcher drove in two on a single to left. Lecher was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Fowler plated two more with a single just beyond the shortstop’s glove.

Simpson doubled to start the RS second and Titkemeyer singled. Kremer chased home two runs with a single to center and Powell doubled in Kremer.

Titkemeyer and Miller pitched the final three frames for RS, posting nine strikeouts and permitting just a single and stolen base to Lecher.

Three errors assisted the Shiners in putting the game out of reach in the third. In the frame, Miller doubled and Titkemeyer and Kremer singled to turn things over to leadoff. Emma Russell and Courtney singled and Works had an RBI double. Stephens worked out of two bases-loaded jams in the bottom of four.

BHS faced Rushville Monday and Jac-Cen-Del Tuesday. Next is Thursday’s home duel with Greensburg.

Lady Dogs look to improve in 2023

There was some tough sledding for the Batesville Lady Bulldogs and first-year coach Gene Cooney on the diamond last spring – the path may remain rocky in 2023 with a cast of just one senior and five upperclassmen in all.

Cooney’s young squad hopes to improve upon a 3-20 season (0-14 in the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference) that ended with a 16-1 loss to South Dearborn in the postseason.

The primary challenge will be in the center of the infield as there’s inexperience at the pitcher’s position. Junior co-captain Renee Lecher and Kennedy Westrick, senior co-captain, have some varsity innings under their belt … but not a ton. The other hurler on the roster is freshman Libby Stephens.

Among returning players, Lecher (HR, 13 RBI) was second only to the junior starting shortstop Calli Fletcher (7 extra base hits, 9 RBI) in batting average – .333 and .327. When not in the circle, Lecher will be manning the hot corner or across the way at first base. Freshman Lexiyne Harris appears to have second base sewn up while competition at first includes Stephens and junior Claire Saner and at third with freshmen Kalli Obermeyer and Cora Roth. Catchers’ corps is made up of Roth, Harris and junior Natasha Fowler.

A bevy of youngsters, including Roth and Obermeyer, are trying to carve themselves an outfield role. Saner and Fowler are the elder statesmen among the group that consists of sophomores Marlee Obermeyer, Kailey Schaeffer and Georgia Voegele and freshmen Iris Kopp, Kelli Livers, Addy Froehling, Madi Clift and Ava Hilbert.

Assisting Cooney this season are Cory Fletcher and Rick Caswell.

The new campaign will get underway tonight at home against the South Ripley Raiders. The Bulldogs visit Rising Sun Saturday, 11 a.m. First conference game is Monday as the Rushville Lady Lions come to town. The sectional draw is scheduled for Sunday, April 30, with the tournament contested between May 22-27.
