Batesville now .500 after shutting down Union County in the second half

The Batesville Lady Bulldogs hosted the Union County Lady Patriots on Friday. UC got hot early taking a 9-0 lead with Katie McCashland hitting two three pointers in the first minute of play. The Lady Dogs finally scored a basket two minutes later when Lydia Haskamp hit an open jumper. Marlee Obermeyer hit a three pointer and Alyson Peters collected four points from the free throw line, but the Lady Patriots stayed hot and took a 23-9 lead to finish out the first frame. BHS stepped up their defense in the second quarter holding UC to 1 of 9 shooting in the frame. The offense continued to score led by Peters and Obermeyer adding nine points between the pair. An Emma Weiler three pointer closed the gap and the Lady Dogs trailed by seven at the half, 28-21. The third frame momentum swung to the home team as the Lady Dogs went on a 5-0 run to tie the game up at 28. The Lady Patriots only managed to score four points from the foul line in the third quarter while Peters gave BHS the lead after hitting a field goal with 20 seconds to go in the period. Batesville led after three quarters 34-32. Brooke Fields started the final frame off with a three pointer to put UC back up by one. Peters answered with her own basket from downtown and UC’s McCashland matched that on the next possession, and it was 38-37 in favor of UC. The BHS defense then stepped up again and stopped the Lady Patriots from scoring the remained of the contest. The Lady Dogs dropped nine more points on UC and collected their first victory of the year moving to 1-1 with the 46-38 win. Peters led Batesville in scoring with 16 points followed by Obermeyer with 9, Weiler finished with 8, Sophie Gesell scored 5 all in the third frame, and Cora Deputy and Haskamp both finished with 4 points on the night.

The Lady Bulldogs are back in action tonight as they host the North Decatur Lady Chargers (1-3) and look to avenge the 52-46 loss from last season.
