The Pirates were blanked by Greenfield Central on Friday evening 57-0. The #9 Ranked Cougars earned their second shutout in as many games after taking out Madison 49-0 in week one.

Pirates look to turn the tides

The Pirates’ longtime head coach Scott Moore has stepped down after 15 years at the helm of the Bucs; he ends his tenure with Greensburg with a record of 80-83 that included a 2012 sectional championship. The Pirates are now under the tutelage of first-year head coach Wes Anderson. Anderson comes from a successful New Palestine team where he was the Dragons’ wide receiver and special teams coach for the last seven years.

The Bucs are coming off a 4-7 season after a second-round shutout (0-28) at the hands of Lawrenceburg in the sectional. The Bucs finished the season strong with three straight wins before that loss and return one of the top offensive linemen in the EIAC. Senior Robert Eisert, a 6’4” 270 lb. tackle, was an all-conference selection a season ago. Complementing Eisert will be junior Reed Hungerford. The combo should move bodies and give the Bucs’ backfield another 2,000-yard rushing season and then some.

Anderson will deploy a stable of running backs led by junior Kaden Acton. Acton is a speedy back that has seen two years of varsity already; he took eight carries for 185 yards against Milan his freshman season and has gained 761 yards over the past two. Sophomore Austin Cruz will see carries this season along with Brayden Rankin, who got varsity carries in 2022.

The Pirates will be a ground-heavy offense after the loss of a two-year starter at the signal caller spot. The offense this season will be led by sophomore quarterback Bryson Abplanalp, who will replace the now Indiana Hoosier Sam West. The sophomore QB will have a handful of receivers stretching the field this season with juniors Carson Miller and Camden Loudin on the outside with senior Hunter Springmeyer and freshman Myles McKinsey on the inside. Anderson stated “All four are great weapons and I think Abplanalp is going to surprise some folks. He’s got a live arm and can make all throws.”

The defense returns linebackers Rankin (54 tackles) and Jesse Hadler (75 tackles and two sacks) along with defensive back Owen Meadows (85 Tackles, 1 INT) and the loss of several seniors will see several new faces step in on the defensive side of the ball.

The special teams will return kicker Hunter Springmeyer, who hit 22 extra points last season for Greensburg. Anderson is also excited about freshman K/P Jacoby Miller who is a dual-sport athlete football/soccer but has the potential to be a big-time weapon in the kicking game.

Reed Hungerford

The Bucs will be one of the few teams that will play all seven other EIAC schools this season after dropping Milan from the schedule and picking up a week eight game against East Central. They will start the season on Aug. 18 with a new turf field hosting Shelbyville.

Pool Play Tie-Breaker Scenarios-

If 2 teams tie in pool play, head-to-head competition results will be used to determine seeding.

If 3 teams tie in pool play, point differentials from pool play competition will be used.

The point differentials of the teams involved in the tie are totaled. Teams are ranked according to the sum of the point differentials, with 1st in the pool being the team with the largest point differential, 2nd being the 2nd highest, and 3rd being the team with the lowest differential.

15 points will be the maximum differential of a contest (ex: If a team beats another team by 27, the 15-point maximum will be used for the contest)

Strong second half propels Pirates

BATESVILLE – Greensburg knows it will always be a “Dog” fight – pun intended – when the Pirates face off with rival Batesville in boys basketball. And for 2 ½ quarters Friday night, it was.

BHS closed to within 29-25 on sophomore Cade Kaiser’s drive down the left lane, but just a minute later, the Bucs held a 10-point advantage after three-point plays by Ki Dyer – one traditional, the next more modern. The Bulldogs would outscore the visitors 26-19 down the stretch, but Greensburg held on for the 54-51 victory in the Pirates’ season-opening contest.

Tied at 21 at intermission, Bulldog big man Cole Pride was fouled early when play continued and hit both foul shots. A jumper in the lane from Jack McKinsey retied the game. But a lob to Addison Barnes-Pettit for his first points of the matchup ensured Greensburg’s lead for the remainder of the night. After a steal and score for McKinsey and another Barnes-Pettit bucket (Dyer assist), BHS coach Aaron Garrett asked for timeout at 29-23.

Later, the guests had their first of three 11-point leads at 36-25. Batesville ended the third quarter with four unanswered; Kaiser hit two at the stripe and Gus Prickel swiped a ball for fast-break points when Greensburg was looking to hold for a final shot.

The Bucs got those four back within the opening minute of the fourth. A tip-back by Jeter Edwards and a basket for Dyer made it 40-29. A nice little 6-2 run for the Dogs followed. Junior Jack Grunkemeyer hit from the field, Pride scored on a putback, and Kaiser again went into the rack with his off hand. Garrett called a full timeout at 4:11.

The hosts got even closer after Pride was fouled on a tip-in and completed the 3-point play. But four straight points by Dyer led to another BHS stoppage at 48-38. The Dogs got a follow-up by Grunkemeyer out of the break but Edwards’ drive kept GCHS in control late at 52-42. A 9-2 run for the home team, capped by Sam Johnson’s late triple, produced the more deceiving difference of three points.

Dyer scored the first points of Greensburg’s season to start the game at 2-0. A Pride jump shot at 6:17 was the only other offense until the 3:08 mark of the first frame. Pride and Abe Tebbe (Dyer assist) traded hoops and a Dyer fielder made it 7-4 in favor of the Bucs after one.

Tebbe and Justin Adkins scored early in the next period for the visiting squad, as did McKinsey (assist to Dyer). BHS kept pace with Johnson, Kaiser (from Johnson) and Pride conversions, the latter coming at the foul line. The charities triggered an 8-0 run for the Bulldogs; Kaiser followed in his own miss and Grunkemeyer put in four consecutive points.

At 16-13, the Pirates answered with six of their own – Edwards hit a three and Adkins scored off a loose ball. A 5-2 BHS spurt ended the half as Carson Laker was responsible for three of those.

Dyer led all scorers with 18 and Grunkemeyer topped BHS with 16. Pride added 13 and Kaiser and Edwards a dozen each. Other scoring: Barnes-Pettit and McKinsey 6, Tebbe and Johnson 5, Adkins 4, Laker and GCHS’ Bradley Lutz 3 and Prickel 2.

Greensburg finds out East Central is willing and Trabel

If it was ever in question which EIAC girls’ basketball team is the top on the totem pole, Josie Trabel answered that Tuesday night. Her East Central Lady Trojans hosted Greensburg. Trabel faced off with Leah West in a battle of the top scoring players in the conference with West putting up 17.5 ppg and Trabel averaging 17.8. For the first half West had her team battling even with the three-peat champ Lady Trojans but Trabel took matters into her own hands in the third quarter putting up 14 of EC’s 19 points in the frame. She added five more in the fourth quarter and finished the contest with 25 while holding West to just 12 points on the night. East Central pulled out a 53-42 win, giving them a 5-4 record on the season and a 2-0 start in EIAC matchups. Greensburg drops below .500 on the year with a 3-4 record. The loss puts them at 0-1 in EIAC games.

East Central came out firing on all cylinders with Caitlyn Dick and Trabel getting EC started with a 5-0 run to begin play. West scored the first basket for the Lady Pirates to stop the two-minute scoring run by the home team. Dick scored again then West countered with a long ball, and it was 7-5 in the Lady Trojans favor. That was the last shot Greensburg would hit over the next four minutes as EC 9-0 run. The first frame finished with EC up 18-6. The Lady Bucs battled back in the second period starting the frame with four players hitting from downtown. West, Emma Adams, and Aly Powers all hitting a three, and Mary Harmon tied the game up at 18-18 with just 2:20 played in the frame when she completed the quartette of trey’s for GCHS. Dick answered back for EC scoring six in the period, Emily Klem chipped in a basket with just over a minute left in the half and EC pushed the lead back to eight. Harmon saved face for Greensburg adding another triple with 30 seconds to go, making the score 27-21 at the half.

The third frame belonged to Trabel who collected six quick points from two, and-one opportunities and hit six field goals in the period. Dick added a three and Laney Baker hit two freebies as the Lady Pirates fell behind 46-31 to start the final frame. Trabel scored the first three points in the fourth quarter then Adams hit a three-point shot and that was the last score for the next five minutes as the teams stayed at a 49-34 stalemate. Trabel broke that with 1:40 left to play by hitting a basket to start a mini scoring spree from both teams. Powers, Emma McQueen, and Carmen Thackery all scored for the Lady Bucs and Baker for EC to finish the contest with the Lady Trojans winning 53-42.

Unofficial scoring- East Central Lady Trojans- Tarbel 25, Baker 15, Dick 9, and Klemm 4. Greensburg Lady Pirates – West 12, Adams 9, Harmon 8, Powers 8, Thackery 3, and McQueen 2.

The Lady Trojans next contest is Thursday when they host Madison. Greensburg hosts Connersville on Saturday. The EIAC game tips of at 1:30pm.
