Gossett leads Lady Lions in a comeback win over North Decatur

North Decatur hosted the Rushville Lady Lions on Tuesday evening. The cross-county battle has gone Rushville’s way the past seven years, including a 59-27 win for the Lady Lions last year.

The Lady Chargers led after the first quarter 18-13 and at the half 27-25. Rushville got the hot hand in the third frame, dropping 17 points and holding North to 11, it was 42-38 through three quarters played. The final frame netted 10 total points between the squads and the Lady Lions escaped with a 48-42 win. The loss is the first for the Lady Chargers at home this season and they now sit at 10-5, Belle Gossett led the way for the Lady Lions scoring 23 points and grabbing 6 rebounds

North came out in the first frame with Ella Kunz leading the way scoring four early points from the paint and ND started on an 8-0 run before Briley Munchel hit a three-pointer. Madi Allen then scored seven points for North, and Kelsey Haley hit a three-pointer. Gossett hit back-to-back three-pointers to pull Rushville back within five points of the hosts. North led 18-13 after one quarter.

The second period saw the Lady Chargers land seven free throws while Rushville added 12-points hitting from deep and connecting from the charity stripe. The Lady Lions pulled close after a Gracie Buzzard layup got Rushville within three-points of the Lady Chargers. The Lady Lions closed the gap to two by the end of the half and North led 27-25.

In the third frame the Lady Lions took the lead early and never looked back. Gossett got hot, leading the way, scoring seven points and Munchel adding six more in the frame. That gave Rushville a four-point lead through three quarters, it was 42-38.

Both teams played top tier defense in the final frame with Rushville getting six points and holding North to four points, all from from Allen. Rushville got the win 48-42.

The victory now has Rushville over .500 with a 7-6 record, The Lady Lions will look for their fourth win in a row when they travel to take on the Seymour Lady Owls tomorrow at 1:30.
