EIAC teams suffer losses on Friday

FARMLAND- The Greensburg Pirates basketball team fell to .500 on Friday after a three point loss to Triton Central. The Pirates led after the first frame 22-14, and led at the half 28-22. The Tigers put up 14 third period points while holding Greensburg to nine. Going into the final quarter the Pirates led was cut to one point, they led 37-36. The Tigers out scored the Pirates 18-14 in the final period to win the game 54-51.
Jack McKinsey led GCHS in scoring with 16, Ki Dyer added 13, Jeter Edwards scored 11, Anderson Barnes-Pettit 4, Reece Beaver 3, Abe Tebbe and Justin Adkins both scored two points. The Pirates travel to Jennings County (5-0) on Tuesday, and they host Franklin County(5-0) next Saturday.


ST.LEON- The East Central Trojans had a rough start to their season on Friday. The Jennings County Panthers put up 27 points in the second quarter to take a 44-29 lead at halftime. East Central was only able to put up 14 points in the second half and lost 73-43. Carson Pieczonka led EC i. Scoring with 18 points, Cole Wheat finished with 8, Joel Richter 7, Dylan Maxwell 6, and Noah Mersman 4.

Spartans earn win number three over Pendleton Heights

The Connersville Spartans hosted Pendleton Heights on Saturday evening and came away with a 56-45 victory. The Spartans found themselves down 16-12 after the first period. Josh Williams sank two long balls and Connersville took the lead early in the second quarter. They led at halftime 26-24. They out scored the Arabians in the third period 12-10 and led 38-34 going into the fourth quarter. Lucas Barron helped secure the Connersville win by scoring nine points in the period. The Spartans scored 18 in the frame and won 56-45, and moved to 3-2 on the season.

Josh Williams led the way with 23 points, Barron finished with 16, James Williams 8, Braxton Myers 6, and Brayden Pearson 3. Connersville will be back in action next weekend, they host South Dearborn (5-1) on Friday and travel to Richmond(3-2) on Saturday.

Lady Pirates edge out a win over Rushville

Coach Melissa Marlow and the Rushville Lady Lions would soon like to forget Saturday evenings conference game with Greensburg. The Lady Lions led by double digits for most of game, but they saw a fourth quarter lead disappear and Rushville found themselves trailing with less them a minute to play. Greensburg’s Leah West had a career game, dropping 30 points and leading her team back from 13 points down at halftime. The Lady Pirates snatched their third EIAC win in a row and sixth overall win on the season.

The first period began with a West three pointer putting the Lady Pirates up 3-0, then a two minute dry spell for both teams took place.  Belle Gossett got Rushville on the board at the 5:30 mark and that started a scoring run for both squads. Mary Harmon hit two baskets and West another, Greensburg went up 9-4. Kylee Herbert and Gossett scored for the Lady Lions, then GCHS freshman Aly Powers scored two-points. Briley Munchel got her first basket with 2:00 to go in the period and that began a Rushville run where they scored 11 unanswered points. West added a free throw with 15 seconds to go but Rushville was up 19-12 after one period. Gossett put up 11 points in the first frame and started the second with two more points. The remainder of the quarter was low scoring affair with West scoring four points for Greensburg and the Lady Lions scoring eight points, led by Leonie Boyer with four. Rushville led by 13 at the half 29-16. 

The third quarter went in favor of the Lady Pirates with West scoring eight points in the frame and Powers adding five. Rushville scored eight in period, four of those points from the charity stripe. Greensburg cut the lead to eight by the end of the period, Rushville led 37-29. West came out firing in the final frame and scored six points in the first two minutes, cutting the lead to four. Boyer went four for four from the free throw line and Munchel scored a basket putting the Lady Lions up by eight with 4:30 to play. The Lady Pirates went on a 8-0 run over the next three minutes with West hitting a three to tie the game up at 43-43. With under a minute to play Harmon drove the lane and laid in basket to give Greensburg the lead. The minute was a free throw battle with West hitting three of four for GCHS and Rushville hitting four of six. The Lady Pirates got the fourth quarter come from behind win with a score of 48-47. Greensburg is now 6-4 on the season and moves to 3-1 in EIAC games. The Lions drop to 4-5 and 1-1 in conference games. 

The Lady Lions will host Jennings County(5-1) on Tuesday. Greensburg will look to extend their three game win streak next Friday when they host Batesville(4-5) for an EIAC matchup.

Knights earn two road victories

The South Dearborn Knights moved to 3-1 after two road wins over the last two days. The Knights travelled south of the river to face Pendleton County(KY) on Thursday and came away with a 67-32 win. Ryan Willoughby led the Knights with a 30-point affair. Adam Kunkel and Breckin McCreary each added eight points, Hudson Shackelford 7, Brodie Teke 6, T.J. Wissing and Jake Daugherty 3, and Zander Schwab added 2.

The Knights then travelled last night to face Jac-Cen-Del and came away with another win. Willoughby chipped in 21 points leading the Knights to a 55-44 win over the Eagles. Shackelford put up 15 points, Kunkel 7, Schwab 6, Adam Gainor 3, Teke and McCreary finished with 2 each. 

South Dearborn has a week off to prepare for the Madison Cubs who will make their way to Aurora next Friday, Dec. 9.

Lady Dogs finally get Jac-Cen-Del, add another win over Connersville for a 2-0 weekend

It had been over seven years since the Batesville Lady Bulldogs had defeated the Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles on the hardwood, a stretch that went 11-0 in favor of county rival JCD.

That changed Friday night at BHS. The Dogs pulled out a tight 49-47 win over the Eagles to even their season record at 3-3.

After one period, the score was tied at 12-12. The hosts gained some separation over the next eight minutes, taking the second quarter 13-8 to lead by five at halftime. The Eagles got three of those back out of the locker room, going into the final frame down 36-34. The squads were even in the fourth, each netting 13 points. Sophomore Aly Peters led all scorers with 23 points, hitting all seven free throw attempts. Classmate Lydia Haskamp netted 10 tallies. JCD put three players in double figures – Julia Meyer 16, Reagan Hughes 14, Olivia Neal 12.

Vs. Connersville Saturday afternoon in the Spartan Bowl, the Bulldogs made it three wins in a row while picking up their first Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference victory. Final was 54-41. The guests had a sluggish start, trailing 12-11 after eight minutes of play. The turnaround came in period two, as BHS outscored the Spartans 13-5 to lead by seven at half. Peters completed an excellent weekend with 22 more points and Haskamp again posted 10.

BHS (4-3, 1-0) travels to Shelbyville Saturday for a matinee with the Lady Golden Bears.

East Central Ladies drop fourth in a row

The Lady Trojans fell to the Mt. Vernon (Fortville) Lady Marauders by 23 points on Saturday. The road loss is the fourth in a row for EC, after starting 4-0 now sit at .500 on the season. The Lady Trojans will look to get back on the winning track with a home stand starting Thursday with a matchup against Madison (5-1). EC will host Jennings County (4-1) on Saturday. Laney Baker led the Lady Trojans in scoring with 7, Emily Klem and Josie Trabel each added 6 in the Mt. Vernon loss.

Lady Bulldogs split weekend games

The Lady Bulldogs hosted two games this weekend. In Friday night’s contest Batesville fell to Seymour 60-47. After trailing 6-0 to start the game, Marlee Obermeyer got the Lady Bulldogs on the board with a free throw. Alyson Peters then scored seven straight points and it was a 9-8 ballgame with 2:00 to go in the opening period. The Lady Owls began another run and added five points to take a 14-10 to end the first quarter. Seymour scored the first four points in the second frame before Emma Weiler put a three-ball in. Peters then put in a layup and the score was 19-17 midway through the second quarter. Seymour then went on 9-0 run, Claire Saner was able to stop with a three pointer. The Lady Owls finished the half scoring four points and taking a 34-20 lead into the locker room at halftime. Batesville scored the first basket of the second half with Sophie Gesell doing the honors. With four minutes to go in the period Batesville pulled within eight points after an Obermeyer long ball made the score 38-30. The Lady Owls got hot again and went on a 10-0 run. The Lady Dogs finally stopped the run, the senior Weiler knocked down the final basket of the frame and the score was 48-32 to start the last period. The Lady Bulldogs put up 15 points in the final frame with Obermeyer scoring seven. Batesville wasn’t able to catch up to the Lady Owls and trailed by 10 or more for the remainder of the contest. The Lady Dogs were led in scoring by Peters with 15, Obermeyer scored 11 on the night, Gesell 7, Lydia Haskamp 6, Weiler 5, and Saner 3.

On Saturday evening the Lady Bulldogs got a little of the frustration out from the previous night loss. Taking on South Ripley, Batesville went up big in the first frame starting the game on a 16-0 run. Peters led the charge scoring 11 of those points. The Lady Raiders didn’t land a bucket until the 1:20 mark of the first quarter and BHS led 16-2 after one period of play. Batesville outscored South Ripley in the second quarter 10-9 and took a 26-11 lead into the locker room at halftime. The third frame netted eight points for Batesville with Haskamp and Peters both scoring four points each. The Lady Raiders outscored Batesville in the quarter 9-8. South Ripley was able to outscore Batesville in the final quarter, putting up 19 points to the Lady Bulldogs 10, six of those came from the charity stripe with Ava Hanson, Weiler, and Peters all going two-for-two from the line. Batesville was able to fend off the late comeback and secure a 44-39 victory to move to 2-3 on the season. Leading all scorers in the contest was Peters with 21 points, a career high for the Sophomore topping her 18-point outing against Blackford last season. Weiler finished the game with 8, Haskamp 6, Gesell 4, Lizzy Nobbe 3, and Hanson finished with 2 points. The Lady Bulldogs will be on the road this weekend with a Friday contest at Jac-Cen-Del with a 7:30 varsity tip off time, and a Saturday matchup with Connersville that tips at 2:30pm.

Knightstown- Rushville faced off with the New Castle Lady Trojans at the Hoosier Gym on Friday night. Rushville jumped out to an early lead with Briley Munchel getting hot from three point land. Munchel’s 14 points all came in the first frame as the Lady Lions pressed New Castle’s offense and went up 27-6 after the first frame. Both squads added 4 points each in the second quarter and Rushville led 31-10 at halftime. Leonie Boyer dominated the third frame scoring 12 points and putting the Lady Lions up 45-16 after three quarters. New Castle doubled their total dropping 16 on the Rushville reserves in the final frame, But Melissa Marlow’s Lady Lions pulled out the win 49-32 to start the season. Leading Rushville in scoring was Boyer with 21, Munchel with 14, and the senior Belle Gossett scored 7 with five of her points coming from the charity stripe.

Greensburg sails past Jac-Cen-Del in opener

The Lady Pirates opened the season at home with a dominating win over the Lady Eagles Friday night. Leah West led GCHS with 23 points, her 10 point first quarter put the Bucs out front 26-5 through one and up 42-11 at the half. Carlee Adams kept Greensburg in the lead adding five points in the third frame. JCD added 24 second half points but freshman Aly Powers put up eight points in the second half to keep Greensburg out front and cruise to a 69-35 win. West scored 23, Powers 16, and Emma McQueen had 11 to lead the Lady Pirates in scoring. Greensburg will host North Decatur on Tuesday.
