Connersville’s come back falls short, Spartans now at .500

SHELBYVILLE- The Connersville Spartans took on the Shelbyville Golden Bears on Saturday evening. The Spartans fell behind fast after a 14-0 Shelbyville run. Coach Kerry Brown’s team battled back over the next three quarters to tie the game up with just two minutes remaining. Connersville sent SHS junior Luke Brinkman to the line and he won the game from the charity stripe for his team. The Golden Bears held off the Spartans for a 44-42 win.

Braxton Myers started the game hitting a three-point shot for Connersville to take a 3-0 lead. Ollie Sandman then hit two long balls as the Golden Bears went on a 12-0 to end the first frame up 12-3. Over the remainder of the first quarter CHS went 0-5 shooting with four turnovers. Shelbyville started the next period with Damon Badgley increasing the lead and another two minutes before Connersville was able to add to the scoreboard. After an eight-minute scoreless draught Josh Williams drained an open three and the Spartans were off and running. Josh and James Williams combined for 11 points in the quarter and went into halftime down by just five points, Shelbyville led 19-14.

Myers started Connersville off scoring five points and Jo. Williams hit a two-point jumper and then found himself  at the line. He hit the freebie to tie the game at 22-22 with 3:40 to go in the frame. Sandman paced the Golden Bears for the rest of the quarter scoring nine points while Jo. Williams matched Sandman with nine in the frame. A Jackson Parker three pointer was the difference maker as Shelbyville led 34-30 after three quarters of play.

The final period started with Lucas Barron getting his first basket of the contest, but two baskets from the Golden Bears had them up 40-32. With five minutes to go Ja. Williams put in two-points and Gavin Pearson hit from downtown and Connersville was within three points of the hosts. Shelbyville got two free throws to pull back ahead by five, Jo. Williams went to the line sank both shots, got a steal on the next possession, and went coast to coast hitting the shot and drawing a foul. With 1:52 left on the clock, Jo. Williams tied the game at 42-42 with the freebie. Both squads remained scoreless over the next 1:30 when Brinkman went to the line and hit one of two. Down by one point and with 4.1 seconds left Blaine Hornsby drew a foul sending the Spartan to the line but he missed both his attempts. A quick foul sent Brinkman back to the line where he again hit one of two giving Shelbyville the 44-42 win.

The Spartans were led in scoring by Josh Williams he put up 24, Myers finished with 8, James Williams 5, Pearson 3, and Barron 2. Sandman led Shelbyville with 25 points. Connersville is now 2-2 on the season and will host Pendleton Heights (1-3) this Saturday, December 10.

Greensburg tops Lady Spartans in EIAC hardwood matchup

The Greensburg Lady Pirates hosted the Connersville Lady Spartans Saturday afternoon in an EIAC contest. Leah West got Greensburg on the board first to begin a 7-0 run for the Lady Pirates. Sara Ruble hit a three with 4:30 to play in the first to finally get Connersville on the board. Two more quick baskets from CHS tied the game back up at 7-7. Aly Powers scored on a slashing drive to the hoop that started an 11-3 Lady Bucs run that ended with Mary Harmon collecting on an and one opportunity. Greensburg led going into the second frame 19-10. Ahniyah Bennett scored the first four points in the second quarter for Connersville, then Harmon led the Lady Bucs on a 10-0 run to go up 30-16 with just over two minutes to go in the half. Abby Schwartz and Jacey Wilhelm scored the next five points in the game and where down by nine with 20 seconds to go. Carmen Thackery added a buzzer beater and Greensburg led 32-21 at halftime. 

The second half began with Carlee Adams hitting from downtown and West putting up four points for the Lady Bucs. Hailey Sembach added four points for Connersville before Greensburg went on another 7-0 run before a three from Wilhelm ended the run. Another Adams three and a Sarah Stapp basket gave the Lady Pirates a 51-30 lead going into the final frame. Ruble and Sembach led the Lady Spartans to their highest scoring quarter in the game, the duo scored 12 of the 16 CHS points in the quarter. The Lady Pirates posted 13 points in the final period from four different players as they pulled out the EIAC win 64-46. Connersville fell to 4-5 on the year and 0-2 in conference play. Greensburg got back to .500 on the season with their record now at 4-4 and 1-1 in EIAC games. Connersville is back in action on Tuesday when the host New Castle (0-9) at the Spartan Dome. Greensburg travels to South Dearborn on Thursday for another EIAC match up.

Connersville cruises to first EIAC win

Rushville- The Rushville Lions hosted the Connersville Spartans on Friday evening. The senior laden Spartans, led by former Lions head coach Kerry Brown earned their first EIAC win with a 64-39 victory. Connersville had eight players score in the game and three in double figures. Braxton Myers led all scorers putting up 21 points in the contest. Rushville had seven players score in the game and their senior captain Dylan Thompson fouled out early in the final quarter dropping the Lions to 0-2 to start the season.  

The Spartans started the game on a 12-0 run before Thompson finally hit a free throw at the 3:50 mark to stop the CHS run. XxZavien Jenkins and Chase Woolf each hit a three-pointer for the Lions in the frame. Braxton Myers paced Connersville in the first quarter with eight points and Lucas Barron scored five, including the Spartans only three-point basket and Connersville led by 10 after the first period, 17-7. The Spartans dominated the second quarter outscoring the Lions 15-3 in the frame, they took a 32-10 lead into halftime. Five different players scored in the quarter for CHS with Barron and Josh Williams leading the way with four each.

Quentin Cain found his stroke in the third quarter and sunk two baskets in a row from downtown. Williams put up seven points in the third period for CHS and increased their lead to 30 points. Kameron Morton added a three just before the frame ended and the score was 50-23 going into the fourth quarter. The Lions started the final period with a short hot streak going on a 7-0 run, a turnaround jumper from Williams with 5:30 to go and Myers added seven points giving coach Brown a 30-point lead midway through the period. The Lions got a three pointer from four different players to finish the game out scoring CHS 16-14 in the quarter. Jaden Peterson added a last minute three for the Spartans to give them a 64-39 conference win and move them to 2-1 on the season. The Lions loss drops them to 0-2.

Both teams are back in action this evening. Connersville travels to Shelbyville (1-1) and Rushville hosts New Palestine (2-0) both games have a 7:30 varsity tip time.

Bulldog wrestlers open with loss

The BHS wrestling team started the season traveling to Jennings County Nov. 22. Despite giving up three forfeits, the young Bulldogs won six of 10 matches but fell short in their effort; the Panthers won 39-36.

The six Bulldogs winning by pin were junior David Maher at 138 pounds, sophomores Damien Dance (160), John Dirkhising (195), and Max Amberger (285) and freshmen AJ Dance (106) and Brady Wonnell (145). 

Lion wrestlers open with win

Rushville wrestling started the 2022-23 season by pounding Shenandoah at home 59-21 on Nov. 22. Earning pins were Hunt (113 lbs), Jacobs (126), Tackett (132), Pavey (170) and Collins (285).

The Lady Spartans collect a big win on the road over Shenandoah

Middletown- The Lady Spartans took an early four-point lead after an  Addison Jones three-point shot. The Lady Raiders came back to score on a three pointer, Abbie Schwartz then used her size advantage and hit two layups.  Hailey Sembach added a basket on an offensive rebound put back and the Lady Spartans led after the first frame 12-6. The freshman Jones started the second period with her second long ball, Sara Ruble added a three and Connersville was up 18-6 midway through the second frame. Shenandoah was finally able to stop the Connersville run with two minutes remaining.  Jones got another basket before the half, and it was 21-9 at halftime.

Schwartz collected a three-point play sinking a freebie after getting fouled to start the third frame. CHS went on a 7-0 run to open the second half before the Lady Raiders hit a three-point shot, cutting the lead to 17. Schwartz collected five more points in the frame and the Lady Spartans went into the final quarter up 36-18. A quick 11 points by CHS to start the fourth quarter put the Lady Spartans up 47-22 with four minutes go. Connersville put up 17 total points in the frame and finished with a 53-28 win to move to 2-3 on the season. CHS will travel to Centerville on Friday for a 7:30 varsity tipoff time.  Schwartz led the Lady Spartans with 15 points, followed by Jones with 14, Ruble and Sembach scored 8 each, Ahniyah Bennett finished with 4 and Jacey Wilhelm and Taylor Watkins both scored 2 points in the contest.
