The Franklin County Lady Wildcats’ basketball team had about as good a weekend as coach Kyle VanMeter could have asked for as his team starts the season 3-0. Franklin County’s last 3-0 start came in 2017 when they started 5-0 before falling to Lawrenceburg.
Friday night FC dominated host Rising Sun with a 75-32 victory. Senior Kassidy Schell had a career night, scoring 35 points and tying the school record by hitting seven three-pointers; she tied Whitney Gillman and Amber Calihan. Schell nearly matched the single-game record of 40 points scored by Brandi Jolliff, a mark which has stood since 2007.
The Lady Cats went up 19-6 after the first frame with Schell hitting three of her long balls in the period. Another solid quarter put FC up 41-12 at halftime.
The third frame went to the Lady Cats, and they took a 30-point lead into the fourth quarter, 58-28. In the final frame the Lady Cats added 17 points and held the Lady Shiners to just four points to give them the 43-point blowout. Schell’s 35 points led FC; junior Nicole Mears and sophomore Tiffany Billman each chipped in 10 points in the victory.
Saturday’s matchup saw the Lady Cats face the Madison Lady Cubs in the home gymnasium. The Lady Cats played spoiler to the Lady Cubs’ season opener with a 46-39 win.
Senior Kiersten Schell was leading scorer for FC, dropping 16 points on Madison.
FC jumped out to 13-8 lead after the first frame and went into halftime up 24-17. The second half began with Madison going on a run while holding the Lady Cats to just six points in the frame. FC escaped with a two-point lead through three stanzas.
A 16-point fourth quarter from FC and great defense got the Lady Cats the 7-point victory. Ka. Schell was second in scoring for FC with 12 points. Cam Cahall scored a dozen for the Cubs and Breck Ralston had 10.
Friday night the Lady Cats are back in action facing off with Northeastern. FC will be celebrating youth night and introducing all the youth program players before the varsity game. Friday is also Veteran’s Day. FCHS will be honoring all veterans at the game. If you are a veteran, you and your family will be admitted into the game for FREE that night.
